Torsion springs vs. extension springs

Torsion springs mount on a metal shaft above the door and are the modern standard — durable and better balanced. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and are common on older doors. We replace both, and we always recommend replacing springs in matched pairs so the door stays balanced and the new spring isn't fighting an old, tired one.

Why a broken spring is a safety issue

With a broken spring the counterbalance is gone, so the full weight of the door hangs on the cables and opener. Trying to force it up can damage the opener or the door, and hand-winding a torsion spring without the proper bars is genuinely dangerous.
