Garage Door Spring Repair & Replacement

A snapped spring is our number-one call. We carry torsion and extension springs on the truck and get your door balanced, quiet, and safe again — usually the same day.

Garage Door Spring Repair & Replacement — WeFix Garage Doors

Your garage door springs do the real lifting — they counterbalance a door that can weigh 150 pounds or more so the opener (and you) can move it easily. Springs are wound under enormous tension and are rated for a limited number of cycles, so they eventually fatigue and break. When they do, the door suddenly feels like dead weight. WeFix Garage Doors replaces broken and worn springs throughout Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, quickly and safely.

Signs your spring has broken

  • A loud bang from the garage (the spring snapping)
  • The door won't lift, or only rises a few inches
  • The opener strains, hums, or lifts crookedly
  • A visible gap in the coil of a torsion spring above the door
  • The door slams down instead of lowering gently

Torsion springs vs. extension springs

Torsion springs mount on a metal shaft above the door and are the modern standard — durable and better balanced. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and are common on older doors. We replace both, and we always recommend replacing springs in matched pairs so the door stays balanced and the new spring isn't fighting an old, tired one.

Why a broken spring is a safety issue

With a broken spring the counterbalance is gone, so the full weight of the door hangs on the cables and opener. Trying to force it up can damage the opener or the door, and hand-winding a torsion spring without the proper bars is genuinely dangerous. This is a job for a trained technician with the right equipment.

Can the opener lift a door with a broken spring?

It shouldn't be asked to. Openers are sized to move a balanced door, not to haul its full weight. Running the opener against a broken spring burns out the motor and strips the gears — turning an affordable spring repair into an opener replacement.

Questions

Spring Repair FAQs

How do I know if my garage door spring broke?
Look above the door: a torsion spring with a visible 1–2 inch gap in the coil is broken. Other tells are a door that won't lift, an opener that hums without moving the door, or a loud bang you heard earlier. When in doubt, stop using the door and call us.
How long do garage door springs last?
Springs are rated in cycles (one up-and-down = one cycle). A standard spring is often rated around 10,000 cycles — roughly 7–12 years for an average household, less for a busy family that opens the door many times a day. High-cycle springs are available if you want longer life.
Should I replace one spring or both?
On a two-spring door we replace both. They wear at the same rate, so if one has broken the other is close behind. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and saves you a second service call within months.
Is it safe to replace a torsion spring myself?
We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs hold tremendous stored energy and require specialized winding bars and technique. Mistakes cause severe injuries every year. It's a fast, affordable job for a professional — please let us handle it.
